Emergency Grants to Help Artists During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Since last Friday, I’ve had one upcoming author event after another cancelled or postponed because of COVID-19. Coming on the heels of the expensive repairs I had to make on my car in late January, loss of all that work is catastrophic to me.

North Carolina artists relief fund
North Carolina Artists Relief Fund logoI wasn’t going to post anything about my personal dilemma. People all over the world are dying from this wretched virus; and Artspace, Pinecone, the United Arts Council, and VAE Raleigh have created a relief fund for NC artists affected by cancellation of their events due to COVID-19. I applied for the fund yesterday and crossed my fingers.

I then received an email from the fund coordinator, asking all of us to share via social media the plight of NC artists. More than 125 of us have applied for relief, requesting a total of $144,918. Donors have thus far given $6,725.

North Carolina artists are taking a severe beating from this economic downturn. If any of you good people can contribute to this fund, please do so.

Patreon artists relief fund
Patreon Stream A Thon logoIn addition, today (18 March) from 7–10pm EDT, Patreon is hosting a “Weird Stream-a-thon” to support artists whose livelihood has been compromised by COVID-19 cancellations. During this digital event, Patreon will raise money for a new artist grant—a fund for creators run by creators—benefiting artists whose creative businesses have been adversely affected.

Patreon will kick off the fund by donating $10K, adding an additional $1 for every stream-a-thon attendee. This means that even if you can’t donate, you’ll be helping creators worldwide just through attending (and sharing) this event.

In times of uncertainty and isolation, the world needs creators more than ever. Please join us. And here’s a tweet to share:

Support artists impacted by the #COVID-19 event cancellations, and come together as a community. Tune in to the #WeirdStreamathon with @Patreon, 7–10pm EDT 18 March. Fans and artists, please help spread the word! http://bit.ly/2WkWLbh

Killer Debt Nominated for Daphne du Maurier Award

180214KillerDebtEbookCover200x300I’m delighted to announce that Killer Debt, book #4 of my Michael Stoddard American Revolution Mystery series, has been nominated for the prestigious Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense. To grab a nomination, Killer Debt had to be a better read than several dozen competing books in the historical crime fiction category and receive well over 80 out of a possible 88 points on the judges’ scorecards.

The lady who phoned me to convey the good news was one of the judges who’d read Killer Debt. She said it was the best mystery she’d read in years. She loved what I’d done with the history, with making a redcoat the hero and building so many layers of complexity into his life. She also loved the facts that although it’s a mid-series book, I made it high-stakes and essentially standalone. “You have a new fan!” she proclaimed.

The Daphne Award gives a shout-out to my book’s editor. Without his piercing insight for the past 15 or so years, my books would be “almost there.” And the nomination process gives equal weight to all entries, regardless of the publishing route. If you aren’t traditionally published, the award provides wonderful industry validation for your work.

Thank you, folks, for the support you’ve provided all these years!

Killer Debt book coverI’m running a bit behind on updates; last week I was organizing all my 2017 tax information for my accountant. Since I last posted, Ben Steelman at the Wilmington Star-News posted a great article about Killer Debt (although he misnamed my detective as “Matthew” instead of “Michael,” and the house on the front cover is actually the Nash-Hooper House in Hillsborough, NC). Also, Christine Gentes reviewed Killer Debt on her blog.

Day 5 and 93% Funded!

Killer Debt book coverMy crowdfunding campaign for Killer Debt, book #4 of the Michael Stoddard American Revolution Mystery series, is now at 93% funded only five days into the campaign. Thank you, everyone! I’ll post at least one “Stretch Goal” shortly. Please continue to spread the word about the campaign so we can reach 100%.

Read my interview on the Mysteristas blog if you’re curious why I set my series in Revolutionary North Carolina. I also have a guest post on the HFAC eBooks blog about why there’s much more to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution than the Fourth of July 2026.

Mini Book Tour for Deadly Occupation

Deadly Occupation cover imageA wayward wife, a weapons trafficker, and a woman with “second sight”—it’s a puzzle that would have daunted any investigator. But Michael Stoddard wasn’t just any investigator.

Late January 1781, in coastal North Carolina, patriots flee before the approach of the Eighty-Second Regiment, leaving behind defenseless civilians to surrender the town of Wilmington to the Crown. The regiment’s commander assigns Lieutenant Michael Stoddard the tasks of tracking down a missing woman and probing into the suspicious activities of an unusual church. But as soon as Michael starts sniffing around, he discovers that some of those not-so-defenseless civilians are desperately hiding a history of evil.

Deadly Occupation, book #1 of my “Michael Stoddard American Revolution Mysteries” series, is on a mini book tour through next week. I’ll update the following list as permalinks go live:

Monday 12 October, at the English Historical Fiction Authors blog, Debra Brown posted my essay on Major James Henry Craig, a hero for North Carolina’s loyalists during 1781.

Sunday 18 October, at the Writers and Other Animals blog, Sheila Boneham interviews me. The interview includes a story about how an editor at a mid-sized publishing house didn’t believe my historical research and rejected Deadly Occupation.

Thursday 22 October, at the A Covent Garden Gilfurt’s Guide to Life blog, I discuss William Herschel and astronomy in the eighteenth century.

Sunday 25 October, at the Make Mine Mystery blog, I discuss why I strive to write historical mysteries that are as accurate as possible, rather than settling for “Hollywood history.”
